“As Time Goes By” shows Lebrija in three-quarter back view sitting on a bench in an exhibition space, head in hands, face hidden, elbows resting on knees in the classic downcast pose. This is a photograph that leaves no doubt as to its meaning when we realize that on the wall are Date Paintings – the radically pictorial form of temporal notation adopted by Japanese artist On Kawara in 1965 and unrelentingly pursued, day by day, ever since.
